Americans say more ground has been lost than gained under George W. Bush on a whole range of national issues. The worst reviews are for the economy (87% say the United States has lost ground) and the U.S. position in the world (69%); the most positive are on efforts to fight AIDS.

Americans: Burris Should Be Blocked, Special Election Held

A Monday night poll found 51% of Americans saying the Senate should block Roland Burris -- embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s appointee -- from filling the state’s open U.S. Senate seat. Given a choice, Americans are most likely to prefer a special election (52%) to fill the vacancy.

Americans Back Kennedy Appointment by Small Margin

Americans nationwide lean more for than against the appointment of Caroline Kennedy to fill Hillary Clinton’s New York senate seat, 45% to 36%. But those in the East are more likely to want someone else named, 43% to 38%.

Returning and newly elected members of the U.S. Congress have their work cut out for them as they gather in the nation’s capital Tuesday to open the 111th Congress; only 19% of the American public approved of the way Congress handled its job on average in 2008, the lowest yearly average of the decade so far.

Unemployment Rate Likely to Surge on Friday

Gallup’s hiring measure suggests that the government will likely report Thursday that four-week average jobless claims hit a new high as 2008 came to a close -- exceeding the previous 2008 high of 558,000. In turn, this suggests that December's unemployment rate will exceed 7%.
